Great racks–Thule makes good stuff. They were a bit pricey but Amazon had the best buy.

I really like the folding feature.

However, the racks are simply attached to the crossbars using screw on knobs. As such, the racks can be easily stolen.

This rack does function but not nearly a good as the standard J-Rack. I traded for a smaller car with factory cross-bars. None of the eaily removable rack adapters would work properly. The fold-down feature allows me to garage the car but still load my kayaks quickly for a trip to a local lake. The lower arm is shorter and does not curve up as the standard J-Rack. The result is that it is easier for the kayaks to fall if not strapped quickly, especially if the is a lite breeze.

If I were to recommend it I would add qualifications.

I purchased the Thule brand even though there were other less expensive models. I am one that believes that you get what you pay for. Not so true in this case. This is an excellent product but I didn’t give it five stars because I didn’t think it was heavy duty enough to warrant five stars. If you don’t need the fold down feature that the Hull-a-Port Pro offers then I would recommend purchasing the less expensive “SportRack-Abr511″. These are sold online and at Gander Mountain. After close inspection, it appears that the “SportRack” model and the Thule model may be manufatured at the same entity. The only difference is that the “SportRack” model doesn’t have the ratcheting mechanism with the tie down ropes. The ratcheting mechanisms can be purchased separately. Overall I am satisfied with the Thule Hull-a-Port Pro but I believe that Thule products are a bit overpriced.

I use this to hold a 72lbs, 16′ polypro tandem kayak and it keeps the boat secure and stable on top of my Explorer.

    Highly recommended
